Android Market Sneak Peak

8:37 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

Full steam ahead for the Android OS. They recently released some shots and details for the "Android Market", which is the Android version of the Apple App Store. The big thing with the Android Market is that it is more open than Apple's App Store where developers are not subject to an official approval process. Other than that, it operates much the same way as the Apple App Store. With all the fiascoes of developers applications being pulled from Apple's App Store lately, this should come as a relief to developers.

Dell Studio 15 Intel Core 2 Duo $750

8:29 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

Best Buy has good savings on the high powered Dell Studio 15. I think this deal is only for the Jet Black version. I've seen a couple of people on campus rocking this laptop but I haven't really played with it. The specs on this laptop for this deal are way more than necessary which makes this a very good deal. The savings amounts to a cool $230.

This is a fair deal. Guitar Hero III isn't as good on the Wii compared to it's PS3 or XBOX360 version, so getting it for $20 less is pretty good. If you have no other console to play this beast of a game on other than a Wii, then this is probably a must buy!

Upto $200 in Rebates for Apple Computers on Amazon

9:51 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

Amazon has really good rebates for select Mac computers. The rebates break down as follows:

$25 on a Mac Mini purchase
$50 on the MacBook Air
$75-$100 on the iMac or Macbook
$150 on the MacBook Pro
$200 on the Mac Pro Desktop

There are already some savings on all these machines, and with the rebates on top of it, these are some of the best prices for Macs on the internet. However, it isn't as good as education as the education discount on college campuses, which means this deal is more for non-students/educators.

These rebates are good for purchases till September 15.

Check out the Amazon Apple Store HERE.

Adios!

My bags are pretty much packed and I should be flying back to Montana at 8am tomorrow morning. It's been a great summer. A summer I will never forget. To all my New York folk, I will be back. You certainly didn't see the last of me!

Working for Random House, Inc. this summer was a unique experience that confirmed a few things for me. Now, I should be able to focus more on what I want the rest of my life to look like.

Thank You Random House.
Thank You New York.
To all the friends I've made during my time here, I hope to see you again.

Baby, I'm coming home..

iPhone Companions

11:32 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

To show even more proof that the iPhone is the hot ticket at the moment, all kinds of companion accessories are cropping up to making the iPhone experience heavenly.

Rear Logo Glow

Now, this is just balling. Need to make the Apple logo on the rear shell glow like it's MacBook cousins? No problem says some Russian modders for a neat $300.

Verdict:
Nice to have, too expensive to even care about. I have a silicone case over my iPhone anyways.

6X Telescopic Lens

Need a 6X zoom on your iPhone camera? No problem. Brando has released a telescopic add-on for the iPhone for $20. It takes pictures like this.

Verdict: Pretty neat. Would love to get my hands on one. It's only $20. Come onnnn!

iPhone Stylus

You can thank the Japanese for creating this stylus for iPhone users who have trouble controlling the touchscreen or just have really long finger nails. The stylus has a flexible tip that mimics a finger's ability to control objects on the screen. Also included is a Sim Eject Tool. ThinkGeek offers both silver and black styli for $14.99, imported from Japan.

Verdict: Great little tool for a good price. However, I don't have any problem with the touch screen. If you do, you definitely need to pick one up!

Canon Powershot SD1100 $195

11:42 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

Funny Story. I was walking around South Sea Street Port when I wanted to take a picture of the ships that were docked there. I reached into my bag and started to feel around for my camera. I kept feeling around and it wasn't there! I was pissed off to high heaven. I was so sure that my camera popped out of my bag some time during the course of the day. Arghhhh!

I continued with the rest of my night annoyed at the fact that I might have lost my camera. My beautiful, beautiful camera. Later that night, I finally came back home and there it was, sitting on my dresser. I was embarrassed and relieved at the same time.

The moral of the story? Get on this blog and get a great deal for a camera! Today's deal is the wildly popular Canon SD 1100. If I lost my camera, I would definitely pick this up!

The $1000 iPhone App

7:00 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

There has been a heated discussion recently about the iPhone App "Iamrich" which costs a whopping $999 and does nothing too mind blowing. Critics ridicule the 8 people that actually purchased this application, while those 8 people simply want them to stop hating on their benjamins. You can argue on both sides of course. However, Apple took it on their own hands and pulled the application out of the store. You know what? This could be a collectible now!

Here's a guided walkthrough of the application. You decide. Would you buy this for $999?

Personally, I don't need a $999 app to tell me this. It's not my money, so I'm not hating.

Life after 2.0.1

10:35 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

This morning, the iPhone Dev Team finally released Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 which jailbreaks/unlocks iPhone firmware 2.0.1. I remember the hours I consumed downgrading my firmware from 2.0 to 1.1.4 and then finally upgrading to 2.0 when Pwnage 2.0 was released a month ago. After I got back from the beach and heard about Bernie Mac's passing, I decided to take the plunge and Pwn my iPhone 2G to 2.0.1.

Instead of downloading the actual Pwnage Tool 2.0.2, I just downloaded the custom firmware that has already been patched and proceeded to run a restore in DFU mode (very important). After 15 minutes, voila! The App Store, Cydia and Installer Beta 4 were now living in harmony.

The only problems I ran into was that the mail application stopped working. It was a quick fix, though. Go to Cydia and download BossPrefs and fix DIR Permissions and you should be good to go. Also, I had to restore my backup three times before it finally stuck. It was so weird. It took so long for one backup to be restored, and I painstakingly had to do it three times. If that happens to you, just complete a backup restore once, and unplug it. Plug it in again and if it prompts you to restore a backup, click set up for a new iPhone. That should solve that problem.

I didn't really notice any significant improvements with this firmware yet. I guess we're all really waiting for 2.1 to come out which is in developer's beta. Apple really needs to get their act together.

All-in-all thanks iPhone Dev Team!

{ Click here for Custom Firmware (2G/3G/Touch) and instructions }

-->Pwnage 2.0.2 doesn't unlock iPhone 3G just yet.

R.I.P Bernie Mac & Isaac Hayes

8:23 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

I don't know what to say. I'm shocked. R.I.P. Bernie (50). You will not be forgotten.

UPDATE:

Isaac Hayes (65), too? Are you serious? R.I.P. I really can't wrap my head around all of this.

I saw a headline in the paper today "Heaven just got funnier", referring to the death of Bernie Mac. Now, the headline would probably read "Heaven just got funnier and more soulful".

The Next Mobile Killer App: Rich Web Browser?

7:39 PM / Posted by Nico Atienza / comments (0)

This is big! A new startup Skyfire has recently put into beta their mobile web browser that promises to deliver the full web experience. Something like Safari on the iPhone but better with full Flash and Ajax capabilities. Right now it's in private beta for Symbian S60 users, which is great news for Nokia users. It's interesting to see if this ever comes out for the iPhone. They can probably submit this to the App Store but I'm pretty sure Apple will reject it on the spot if it reaches full functionality. Apple doesn't look too kindly on competition on it's baby, right? Enough talk. Check out the vid.
